In South Korea there was a police bomb dog named Quinn, who could smell his way to almost everything. When a young girl disappeared on the island of Jeju, police tried to find her with thousands of people and many dogs for a month without any results. When bomb dog Quinn was brought in for a try, the missing body was found within twenty minutes. Short thereafter, Quinn was sent to the laboratory to be cloned into more super talented dogs for the officials.

The laboratory is a non-profit institute supported by the South Korean government, and it’s not reserved for research or official use only. For 100,000 USD you can buy an identical clone of your beloved, perhaps old and dying pet. The laboratory says it is yet too early to clone a human, but that the technology exists. The Same New Pet is a story of looking for something that is perhaps not supposed to be found. About the act of being too curious and about playing God.

In 2016, Valmunen was awarded as the Young Nordic Photographer of the Year, which led him a solo exhibition at Fotografiska in Stockholm.
